Columbia Center for Active Life
of Minority Elders (CALME)
COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION LECTURES
The Columbia Center for the Active Life of Minority Elders (CALME) has established a Community Health Education Lecture Series throughout Senior Centers in Northern Manhattan. CALME is especially interested in reaching the minority elderly population and presents the lectures in English and Spanish. The selected health education topics are those of interest and benefit to seniors (i.e. Hypertension, Diabetes, Arthritis, Dental Care, Foot Care, Nutrition, etc.).
Current partners in this community health education lecture series are the Northern Manhattan Stroke Study (NOMASS), the Allen Pavilions HealthOutreach Program, Associates in Internal Medicine (AIM) and the Washington Heights/Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP). Recently, CALME, in partnership with Community Dent-Care Network, sponsored five bilingual lectures on dental care for seniors. In conjunction with the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, we will soon offer a series of lectures on foot care for the elderly. This joint educational effort will directly benefit the health of the senior population of Northern Manhattan.
The health education lectures are approximately 10-15 minutes in length followed by a question & answer period from the audience. For further information, please contact Nelson Peralta, Project Administrator at (212) 305-6262 or via email: nmp1@columbia.edu.
