EXTERNAL ADVISORY PANEL
The CALME External Advisory Panel was composed of distinguished researchers in aging and community leaders with expertise in community organization, mentoring and minority aging research (see Table II). The Panel meetings served to evaluate the program and to propose alterations and redirection as needed. In each session, in addition to Cores reporting on their agendas and achievements, pilot project investigators presented results.
The Panel meetings were open to the scientific community and Northern Manhattan community leaders with interest in minority aging. At these sessions, the core directors presented the Panel members their core initiatives, historical overviews, mentoring, investigator development, research findings and recruitment issues. Pilot grantees presented research findings to the Panel, experienced researchers and the community leaders. This format promoted interaction between the community at large and all CALME Investigators, and broad dissemination of the activities of the Center. To evaluate fully the workings of the Center, a final executive session, including summations and critiques took place at the end of each meeting between the Panel members and the Executive Committee. The Center used the annual Panel meeting as a method of underscoring the importance of scientific and community participation in aging research. These meetings also promoted interactions between pilot investigators and nationally recognized leaders in the field of minority aging.
