Otolaryngology Chair Named

Dr. Lanny Garth Close became professor and chairman of otolaryngology Aug. 1. In recommending his appointment, the search committee said Dr. Close will make an outstanding contribution to the medical center, "not only in the field of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery but in clinical and academic administration."

"Columbia University has an exceptional reputation and it is my intention to bring the department to a level of prominence that is equal to the stature of this institution," says Dr. Close.

He joined the P&S faculty from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he was professor and vice chairman of otorhinolaryngology and chairman of head and neck surgery. His research focus has been the treatment of laryngeal cancer and advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck and endoscopic treatment of frontal sinus disease.

Dr. Close, a graduate of Texas Tech University, received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and did his internship and residency in surgery at Johns Hopkins. He also completed a residency in otolaryngology at Baylor Affiliated Hospitals and served as an assistant surgeon in head and neck surgery at M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston.
