George Smartt Heads Columbia Security
George Smartt was promoted from associate director of security at the Health Sciences to director of security for Columbia University, effective May 1. Mr. Smartt, a 20-year veteran of the New York City police force, served for nine years in the Columbia security department, five of them on the Morningside campus and the last four at Health Sciences. He joined Columbia in 1985 as a crime prevention and training officer. In 1987, he became manager of training and personnel in the security department, where he developed, implemented, and supervised the training of all new security officers. After serving as assistant director of operations on the Morningside campus, he became associate director of security on the Health Sciences campus in 1990.
He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and public administration from Virginia State University.
