Welcome Mat Offered to New Students

New students and their parents every year often ask the same questions-such as how to identify banking services and laundry facilities and where to find subways and buses-as the students settle into their new home, says Timothy Wagner, residence halls assistant director. This year, a formal effort was initiated to answer the commonly asked questions. The "Welcome Wagon" concept evolved as a means to introduce newcomers to the medical center neighborhood, especially the many incoming students unfamiliar with New York or the Washington Heights area. The Welcome Wagon was held during the four housing check-in days in August and September and provided "one-stop information shopping" for students and their parents. More than 25 vendors offered information about banking, newspaper delivery, cable TV, museum memberships, the Bard Hall athletic club, and neighborhood restaurants. Columbia alumni associations, student governments, and security office and the New York City Police Department also provided information. Representatives of the P&S Club and the Alumni Association are shown here welcoming new students.
